Language is not simply an assortment of words but something that connects an individual to his family, culture, beliefs etc. It is the carrier of history, traditions, customs & folklore from one generation to another. Our language is actually our identity. Dogri has emerged as one of the significant markers of cultural identity for people living in Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu and Kashmir was a Dogra state. Jammu is a Dogra region with Dogri as its mother tongue which has descended from Sanskrit, the language of Vedas. Dogri remained state language during the reign of Maharaja Ranbir Singh. In December 2003, it was given official recognition in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Presently, it is one of the official languages of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. It is taught in schools, colleges & universities. Recently Google added 8 Indian languages on Google Translate & Dogri is one of these languages.
DOGRI SCRIPT: Earlier Dogri was written in Dogra Akkhar (डोगरा अक्खर), which was the accepted script during the reign of Maharaja Ranbir Singh (1857-85). Now, Dogri is written in Devanagari script. It was historically written in Dogra variant of the Takri script.
